Agate is one of the best-known minerals. Agate belongs to the chalcedony family—and thus to the quartz family—and comes in all sorts of different varieties, colors, and shapes. For example, it can be white, grayish, blue, reddish, or various shades of brown. A characteristic feature of agate is often the bands that run through the stone. Depending on the color and the bands, there are many different subtypes, such as: Botswana agate, moss agate, tree agate, banded agate, or lace agate.
A characteristic feature of agate is that it is often almond-shaped; this is because the stone forms inside volcanic gas bubbles. The stone is found primarily in Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, and the United States.
Agate is often confused with jasper, since they have the same chemical composition (SiO₂ + Al, Ca, Fe, Mn). A useful rule of thumb is that agate is more often translucent, while jasper generally is not.
The Effects of Agate…
Agate promotes spiritual and mental growth because it encourages self-reflection and motivates you to step back every now and then and view everything more objectively. Agate is known for protecting and cleansing the aura; it gives you a sense of security and brings your body, soul, and spirit into greater balance. This type of chalcedony protects you from bad luck and misfortune, lifts your spirits, and supports good health.
Agate is a grounding, protective, and stabilizing stone. It promotes inner peace and encourages a calm and level-headed attitude. Agate also promotes rational and logical thinking and can therefore help you concentrate better. Thanks to these properties, the stone encourages a more practical, solution-oriented approach. In addition to these wonderful qualities, agate is often used to help process grief and alleviate feelings of anxiety and phobias.
Agate is a stone often worn during pregnancy, for both mother and child, because it has a protective effect. In addition, it stimulates growth and has a beneficial effect on the uterus. Agate can have a beneficial effect on epilepsy; with regular use of the stone, seizures may become less severe and occur less frequently. This stone is also very effective against inflammation, particularly in cases of eye inflammation, gastritis, and cystitis. Agate has a healing effect on varicose veins and hemorrhoids, both internal and external. Agate also has a positive influence on the stomach, bladder, blood vessels, and eyes. In addition, agate stimulates the metabolism.
The ‘fake’ versions
Unfortunately, agates with ‘dull’ colors are often given a bright hue, such as neon pink or bright blue. This is done with paint. Agate is a somewhat porous stone that can easily absorb the paint. These colors are therefore not natural.
Just because an agate has color doesn’t mean it’s automatically fake. Agate does, in fact, occur naturally in many colors. Dyed agates are often the brightly colored, neon-like varieties. This is also often done to make carnelian redder or to make Chinese band agate more vibrant.
Cleaning and charging…
Agate can be cleansed and recharged in any way. We recommend using a charging and discharging kit.
Crystals and other spiritual products are never a substitute for traditional medicine. Therefore, if you have any symptoms or serious mental health issues, always consult a doctor.
